It's recommended to avoid wearing contact lenses while swimming or showering. This is due to risks such as lens loss and contamination. Contacts, particularly soft types, can absorb chemicals and bacteria from water, leading to eye irritation or infections.
Although it's possible to wear extended-wear contacts overnight, doing so may increase the risk of corneal infections and ulcers. These risks stem from inadequate lens maintenance, unstable tear film, and bacterial accumulation. While silicone hydrogel lenses have reduced concerns about corneal neovascularization, extended wear could still lead to conjunctivitis, often allergic or giant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC), which may also be linked to ill-fitting lenses.
